Frame Advisor is a frame analysis tool within Arm Performance Studio. Arm Performance Studio is our free suite of profiling and performance analysis tools for Arm CPUs and GPUs. It helps graphics developers capture and analyze Vulkan frames. It also helps them visualize GPU workload structure and identify performance bottlenecks with clarity and precision.

I am excited to share that Frame Advisor 2026.1 delivers a major upgrade to Vulkan capture. It introduces a new capture pipeline built on GFXReconstruct. This architectural shift modernizes how Frame Advisor collects frame data. It significantly improves capture reliability, correctness, and long-term scalability for complex Vulkan workloads. This new foundation improves the current capture experience. It also enables exciting future capabilities.

Why modern Vulkan capture needed an upgrade

Vulkan applications have grown dramatically in complexity. Modern engines make heavy use of advanced synchronization patterns, intricate render pass structures, dynamic resource management, and multi-threaded command submission. Accurately capturing and analyzing this complexity requires a capture system that is robust and precise.

Capture correctness is essential for meaningful performance analysis. Incomplete or inconsistent frame data can lead to misleading analysis and wasted debugging time. As projects scale, reliability and scalability become critical. Especially for large frames and content-heavy applications.

The previous Frame Advisor capture mechanism served its purpose. However, it reached its limits as Vulkan usage patterns evolved. To continue delivering accurate and dependable analysis, a stronger and more scalable capture foundation is required.

Frame Advisor 2026.1 Capturing A Complex Vulkan Application

Migrating to GFXReconstruct

To address these challenges, Frame Advisor 2026.1 migrates to a new Vulkan capture pipeline built on GFXReconstruct.

GFXReconstruct is an open-source Vulkan capture technology. It is designed to record and reconstruct Vulkan API activity in a reliable and extensible way. Frame Advisor uses this industry-aligned capture mechanism. It provides a modern and well-defined capture foundation that handles complex Vulkan workloads.

This migration strengthens Frame Advisor in several ways:

  • Improves robustness when capturing complex or resource-intensive applications.
  • Aligns better with industry tooling and reduces divergence from established Vulkan capture approaches.
  • Improves long-term maintainability and allows Frame Advisor to evolve with the Vulkan ecosystem.
  • Provides a solid foundation for future capabilities and enables exciting new features in future releases.

This results in a more dependable and scalable capture architecture that positions Frame Advisor for continued growth.

What this means for developers

This architectural upgrade translates directly into practical benefits for developers.

The new capture pipeline improves the reliability of Vulkan captures. This is especially useful for applications with complex synchronization, resource usage, and rendering patterns. Improvements in capture correctness reduce the likelihood of inconsistencies that could affect analysis.

Developers can expect:

  • More reliable Vulkan captures
  • Improved correctness when analyzing complex frames
  • Reduced modeling inconsistencies
  • Greater confidence in capture results

These improvements are valuable when working on performance-critical graphics workloads. Accurate frame analysis is essential to diagnosing bottlenecks and validating optimizations.

Looking ahead

This release is a significant engineering milestone for Frame Advisor. Migrating to a new Vulkan capture foundation required deep architectural changes and extensive validation across a wide range of real-world workloads. The team has invested a huge amount of effort to ensure that this transition delivers tangible improvements in reliability and correctness, while positioning Frame Advisor for the future.

Frame Advisor continues to evolve as part of Arm Performance Studio. Arm Performance Studio is our free suite of profiling and performance analysis tools for Arm CPUs and GPUs. This new capture architecture provides a stronger and more scalable platform on which to build the next generation of capabilities.
