VMware is evaluating customer interest on enabling VMware ESXi on 64-bit Arm platforms. This work is aimed at several use cases, including cloud-hosted virtualized Arm, edge consolidation and isolation, and edge resiliency with High Availability and Fault Tolerance (HA/FT) for Arm-based applications at the edge.

ESXi-Arm at the edge
VMware brings data center virtualization benefits and resiliency to a more compact form factor at the edge. ESXi-Arm includes features like vMotion, Fault Tolerance and lifecycle management, and it is optimized to run on compact, Arm-based edge form factors.
ESXi-Arm on the SmartNIC
At VMworld 2019, VMware demoed ESXi-Arm running on three plugged-in SmartNIC adapters with the Mellanox BlueField and Broadcom Stringray. This all-in-one demo showcased how ESXi-Arm enables management and data plane offloads, tenant isolation, all while maintaining energy efficiency.
ESXi-Arm in the cloud
VMware has customer previews for Arm Neoverse-based EC2 A1 bare metal instances. Developers can leverage VMware ESXi-Arm in the cloud to run cloud-native and virtualized workloads.
