KubeEdge is an open source system for extending native containerized application orchestration capabilities to Arm-based hosts at the edge.
KubeEdge is an open source edge computing platform built upon Kubernetes with cloud native technologies. It provides core infrastructure support for networking, application deployment and metadata synchronization between cloud and edge. It also supports MQ Telemetry Transport (MQTT) and allows developers to author custom logic and enable resource constrained device communication at the multi-arch Edge. KubeEdge can be applied on IoT, lightweight edge, multi-access edge computing (MEC) and enterprise edge and more.
Edge cloud computing
With business logic running at the edge, much larger volumes of data can be secured and processed locally where the data is produced. KubeEdge extends native containerized application orchestration capabilities from cloud to the multi-arch edge nodes. This reduces the network bandwidth requirements between the edge and cloud, increases responsiveness, decreases costs, and protects customers’ data privacy.
KubeEdge is built upon Kubernetes with cloud native technologies. Developers can orchestrate applications, manage devices and monitor app and device status on edge nodes just like a traditional Kubernetes cluster in the cloud.
KubeEdge became a CNCF sandbox project in March 2019. Since then it has attracted hundreds contributors from almost dozens of different organizations, hundreds of forks, and accumulated thousands of GitHub Stars. KubeEdge is licensed under Apache 2.0. and free for personal or commercial use. KubeEdge is always happy to welcome contributors.
